Alumni Profiles
Sociology concentrators pursue diverse careers that draw upon the ideas and concepts they discussed and debated over their four years of undergraduate study. The rigorous analytical skills and the ability for critical thinking, which they developed through their course work, has prepared them to address real world challenges that range from wrestling with major organizational problems, to figuring out how to better serve and educate the country’s children, to addressing important social issues such as HIV/AIDS.
Through the following profiles we would like to introduce you to some of the many extraordinary alumnae and alumni of Harvard’s undergraduate program in Sociology and their plans upon graduation.
Adrienne Chan
Post-Graduation Plans: I plan to be a choreographer and labor advocate in the dance industry. I will be based in NYC.
Did you do any research assistantships/internships/etc. while you were a Sociology student? Yes! I was an RA for Michèle Lamont for 3 years, starting from BLISS (Harvard Summer Undergraduate Research Village).
Alexandra Friedlander
Post-Graduation Plans: I will be moving to New York City to join the Estée Lauder Companies as a Presidential Associate on the Marketing Track as part of their CEO Global Presidential Program!
Did you do any research assistantships/internships/etc. while you were a Sociology student? I did a few summer internships focused on marketing and consumer psychology within the fashion and beauty industries.
Suggestions for current concentrators? Explore sociology electives beyond the requirements!
Julia Garcia Galindo
Post-Graduation Plans: I am working as a Pre-Doctoral Research Fellow at NYU Stern in the Department of Organizations & Management, planning to eventually apply to PhDs in sociology.
Did you do any research assistantships/internships/etc. while you were a Sociology student? Yes, I was a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Research Fellow, I did a research assistantship with Prof. Emily Handsman and another research assistantship with a professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Education. Additionally, I participated in SHARP (the Summer Humanities and Arts Research Program) twice, once as a Houghton Library Fellow (archive research) and another time as an intern/curriculum development person for Poetry in America. One of my summers I conducted thesis research full time using multiple grants (the Center for American Political Studies and Ethnicity, Migration, Rights).
LyLena Estabine
Post-Graduation Plans: I will be working as an analyst in the DC area.
How did you hear about Sociology? I first learned about sociology reading about the social sciences. My freshman year, I took a lot of economics classes that didn't feel quite right. I also took an anthropology class that didn't feel quite right. I realized that what I was looking for aligned much better with the field of sociology.
Any suggestions for current concentrators? Think of yourself as an academic. Take your work seriously and be curious about everything. Learn to see the world through this discipline, and your life will be an incredibly interesting adventure.
Chelsea Guo
Post-Graduation Plans: I will be working as a Fellowship Coordinator for Sutter Hill Ventures in Palo Alto, CA.
How did you discover Sociology? I thought I would major in communications or PR at a pre-professional university, but sociology seemed the closest match at a liberal arts college like Harvard! I took one sociology of education course my freshman fall and knew I wanted to continue.
Suggestions for current concentrators? Sociology is so broad in the best way and the topics and methods can really help you anywhere you go. I'm so glad I chose it as my concentration and I hope more people can see how much potential it has for career pathways.
Lucy Tu
Post-Graduation Plans: I will attend Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar to pursue my DPhil in Socio-Legal Studies. Expanding on my undergraduate sociology research, I will investigate how U.S. "fetal personhood laws" affect the ways in which women access IVF services and other reproductive technologies. After completing my DPhil, I intend to return to the U.S. for law school.
How did you discover Sociology? (Fun fact: I had never heard of Sociology before college! I thought I would be an English or Statistics concentrator). During my freshman year, I enrolled in a course titled "Sociology of Law," primarily because I was attempting to develop a class schedule that straddled the humanities, sciences, and social sciences all at once (Sociology ticked the social science box). That course challenged me to think about the law -- something I had previously viewed as an absolute and clear-cut framework for understanding the world -- in an entirely different way.
Suggestions for current concentrators? Don't be afraid to cold email professors or graduate students whose work you find fascinating! One of the strongest, most fruitful faculty relationships I developed as a undergraduate was with a sociology professor whom I contacted on a whim because I was interested in her work within reproductive sociology. Also, I am biased, but I firmly believe our department has the most wonderful undergraduates, so get to know your fellow concentrators!
