Rose-Anna Joachim
Hi everyone! My name is Rose-Anna, and I’m pursuing a double concentration in Sociology and Government, along with a language citation in American Sign Language. I’m originally from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and I currently live in Quincy House. I’m also pre-law, and I’m especially interested in immigration, welfare, and inequality—more specifically, how policies around things like public benefits and legal status shape people’s daily lives.
Outside of class, I’m involved in Citizenship Tutoring and Cambridge Public Library VITA, where I work directly with people navigating systems that can often feel confusing or inaccessible. Those experiences have shaped the kinds of questions I’m interested in studying and the kind of work I see myself doing in the future. Outside of that, I love knitting, crocheting, poetry, and indie music. If we share any of those interests, feel free to reach out—and even if we don’t, still feel free to reach out. I’m always happy to talk!
Why Sociology?
I’ve always been interested in what shapes people’s decisions and how their experiences are influenced by the social conditions around them. I’m especially drawn to qualitative work at the micro and meso level, where you can really sit with people’s experiences and understand how they are shaped by institutions, relationships, and broader social forces. Looking ahead, I’m interested in using that kind of understanding in policy or law, ideally in ways that help make society more equitable. One of the things I appreciate most about sociology is how broadly it can be applied. The concentration gives you a lot of room to explore different interests and follow the questions that matter most to you, so if you’re someone with a lot of different curiosities, this would be a perfect fit!
