Lauren Choy

Sociology - Honors Track, Class of 2027

Hello! My name is Lauren, and I am a senior double concentrating in Sociology and HBBE (Human Biology, Behavior, and Evolution). I grew up in Boston (in a smaller neighborhood called Jamaica Plain!) and now live in Currier House.

I am especially passionate about better understanding topics related to housing, social stigma, and healthcare. On campus, I serve as senior representative for the Asian American Association, director at the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter, and manager of the Harvard Pre-Medical Society's Physician Mentoring Program. Throughout my time at Harvard, I've conducted various types of research, spanning from research on zebrafish in a wet lab environment to my current Sociology senior thesis project that looks at conversations of nutrition in patient-physician interactions. In my free time, you can find me going on runs by the river, watching professional basketball, and trying new bakeries.

Please reach out if you have any questions or just want to chat- I would love to meet you!

Why Sociology?

Ultimately, I chose to study Sociology because of the love for every single Sociology class that I have taken here at Harvard so far. In every Sociology class that I have taken, I've been able to better explore the ins and outs of how people interact, how institutions affect social action, and why certain voices are heard more than others. More importantly, studying Sociology has allowed me to better understand my own place in the world, teaching me how my personal relationships and social environments have led me to be the person I am today. As someone planning to one day work in healthcare, Sociology has given me insight into how both the organization of social institutions and the interpersonal interactions between patients and physicians shape health outcomes and disparities. I wouldn't be the person I am today without my experiences in the Sociology department, and so I am forever grateful for that.
