Jocelyn Shek
Hello! I’m Jocelyn, a senior pursuing a joint concentration in sociology and statistics (data science track). I’m originally from Los Angeles but now reside in Quincy House (go penguins!). I’m interested in how community, identity, and opinion are shaped through digital spaces, with a focus on using computational methodology: particularly social network analysis and text-as-data. Outside of class, I’m heavily involved with technical theatre, data journalism, and academic research. Please don’t hesitate to reach out: I’m always down to answer questions or chat more about sociology!
Why Sociology?
The diverse research methodologies used—from historical theory to computational analysis—and the limitless areas of application fulfill my desire to understand the social world in all its forms! I find sociology uniquely suited to analyzing and critiquing society beyond institutional boundaries, and I value the ability to approach issues from multiple perspectives. Above all, I love the incredibly kind, engaged, and knowledgeable students and faculty in the Harvard sociology community!
