Derek J. Robey
Research Interests: Inequality and Stratification; Cultural Sociology; Race, Gender, and Class; and Religion
Derek is a PhD student in Sociology. At the University of Minnesota, Derek primarily focused on social stratification (especially with regard to race, class, and gender) and religion in the United States. His undergraduate thesis examined the ways in which gender and race affect the discourse and dynamics of a group of religious “nones” (atheists, agnostics, humanists, etc.). As an undergraduate, Derek worked on a research paper that studied innovative worship services designed to draw in the growing population of the religious “nones.” In his graduate studies, he is particularly interested in the connection between cultural processes and systems of inequality and stratification.
