Julia García Galindo '25, a concentrator in Sociology with a secondary in Educational Studies has been awarded a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship. The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program (MMUF) of Harvard College selects a small cohort of sophomores to conduct independent research during their junior and senior years and engage in pre-professional development on pursuing doctoral degrees, research, and life in the academy.

Julia is a sophomore in Cabot. Last summer, she received a Houghton Fellowship and conducted an archival independent research project on representations of the white savior industrial complex in popular media during the Spanish-American War. She is currently a research assistant to Dr. Emily Handsman on her project on the implementation of DEI policies in suburban schools. Julia intends to use the Mellon Mays fellowship to study how Puerto Rico's colonial relationship with the United States has and continues to impact its public education system. When not conducting research or attending class, Julia can be found meeting with her PAFees, teaching kids at the Harvard Ed Portal or singing Soprano I with the Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum.
