Center for Geographic Analysis GIS Institute

In January and June, Harvard’s Center for Geographic Analysis (CGA) offers a two-week program of intensive training in geographic information systems (GIS). The GIS Institute is designed for Harvard graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty who want to learn spatial analysis and apply GIS methods in their research. Participants come from a wide variety of disciplines and backgrounds. No previous GIS training is required. Applicants provide a faculty contact and a concise research proposal on work that will be done during the GIS Institute. Include your project idea and goals, spatial data needed for the project, whether you will collect or create these data or use pre-existing data. If you plan to use pre-existing data, indicate what type of data you will be using, and whether or not you have confirmed access to the data already. You will have several days to work on this project with help from the instructors, and present your results on the last day of the program.

Harvard Sociology pays the $100 student registration fee for doctoral students in the Sociology, Sociology & Social Policy, and Organizational Behavior (Macro/Sociology Track) degree programs. Students who have been accepted should contact Jessica Matteson so that she can make payment arrangements directly.
