Doctoral Student in Sociology
Research Interests: The consequences of mass incarceration.
Katie Derzon is a doctoral student in Sociology. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin, majoring in psychology and legal studies. After graduation she served in Peace Corps China as an English teacher. Derzon returned to the U.S. and received a master's from Marquette University through the Trinity Fellowship. While there, Derzon interned at a Milwaukee area non-profit which sought alternative sentences for criminal offenders. Her academic interests focus on crime and punishment in the US, with a specific focus the collateral effects of mass incarceration. Her dissertation examines how prison affects relationship and parenting decisions for women partnered with incarcerated men. Derzon is also a resident tutor in Leverett House.
