**Research Topics:** Economic sociology; international political economy; institutionalist theory; culture

Professor Duina’s research and teaching interests include economic sociology, the nation state, regional economic integration, and the sociology of culture. His research and teaching focus on the construction of capitalist markets, the nation state, and the politics and consequences of international trade. Using the insights of sociological and historical institutionalism, he is especially interested in understanding the design and social and political consequences of trading blocs (NAFTA, the EU, Mercosur, etc.).

He also has an interest in culture. In particular, he wants to shed light on various aspects of American popular culture – especially its competitive qualities, interpretations of the passing of time and transitions in life, and nationalism.

He is the author of *Institutions and the Economy* (Polity Press 2011), *The Social Construction of Free Trade: The European Union, NAFTA, and Mercosur* (Princeton University Press 2006), *Harmonizing Europe* (SUNY Press 1999), *Life Transitions in America* (Polity Press 2014), and *Winning: Reflections on an American Obsession* (Princeton University Press 2011).

He has published in leading journals such as *Economy and Society, Journal of European Public Policy, Review of International Political Economy, Comparative European Politics, New Political Economy* and *Regulation & Governance.*

Professor Duina is a member of the editorial boards of the *Journal of European Public Policy* and *Economy and Society.* He is also Visiting Professor in the Department of Business and Politics at the Copenhagen Business School in Denmark.
