College Fellow Shai Dromi (Harvard University) and Samuel Stabler (Hunter College) published a new co-authored article in Theory & Society, titled "Good on paper: Sociological critique, pragmatism, and moral practice." The article examines how scholars assign normative implications to certain sociological claims and research trajectories, and looks at the ways researchers engage with moral controversy in their area of research. The article outlines several strategies scholars use to address (or to circumvent) morally contentious scholarly questions. As a study case, the article analyzes the historical debates over the secularization thesis in the sociology of religion.
