Academics

The Harvard Sociology Department has a strong commitment to training undergraduate and graduate students to conduct original research using a range of methodologies. With strength in both quantitative and qualitative methods and in the core areas of the discipline, the department trains students to enter careers in research, business and academia.

Our faculty, among the foremost experts in the discipline, offer courses in a wide array of fields.  Areas of expertise include economic sociology and organizations, inequality, urban poverty and the city, race and ethnicity, immigration, gender and family, crime and punishment, culture, political sociology, health, and social change.
