Discussant: Daniel Ziblatt, Professor of Government, CES Resident Faculty, Harvard University

Panel abstract: In recent years, nationalist and populist politics have been on the rise in the United States and Europe. From Donald Trump to the Brexit campaign, calls for curbing immigration, limiting the rights of ethnic and religious minorities, and wresting power from technocratic elites have mobilized large segments of national populations in support of anti-establishment political candidates and parties. Our distinguished panel of experts will discuss the causes of this trend and its implications for the future of democratic politics on both sides of the Atlantic. The event is sponsored by the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies, the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, the Goethe-Institut Boston, and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Policy Fellowship.

The Study Group on Populism, Nationalism and Radical Politics brings together social scientists studying the recent rise of populist and nationalist movements, parties, and candidates in Europe and beyond. The group is co-organized by Bart Bonikowski (Associate Professor of Sociology; CES Resident Faculty), Colleen Driscoll (PhD Student, Department of Government), Max Goplerud (PhD Student, Department of Government), and Noam Gidron (CES Research Associate).
